A tremendous effort by San Telmo and apprentice Jackson Murphy to win over 2200m at Doomben today in the DES LAMBART MEMORIAL BenchMark 80 Handicap.
Settling at the rear, the 7yo gelding, a son of Authorized, was patiently ridden and was brought into the race prior to the turn, and in a few strides the race was all over when he charged to the lead down the outside to win convincingly.
The win was a great triumph for the Esprit Racing team, as he was only brought to the stable earlier in the year, suffering from significant front fetlock issues. The slow build up to fitness involving Sheila Laxon’s patience, Corey Geran’s untiring twice daily swimming regime, and Kelly Gates’ fly weight track riding was shown to great success today. Despite a very firm track, San Telmo was brought to the races in tremendous order and shrugged off any feet concerns with a display that indicates he is back near his best.
“San Telmo has always shown staying potential and now we have got him going there are plenty of options here for him or the Townsville and Cairns Cups,” Sheila said.
“Jackson did a good job and I think he has a real future.”
